Getting more and more Spots

As a follow up to my previous post, with the money I gained from my previous sale I put in a Buy Limit order on SPP.VN with a price of 14.5 cents.  As a result of this, I am now the proud owner of another 1500 shares!

My First Sale

I just made my first ever sale (and profit)!  From everything I have been seeing on the business news this weekend I was getting the impression that, at least for the short term, the mineral market is heading down.  With this in mind, I sold HBM.TO:

Purchase Price: $9.90
Sell Price: $10.91
Qty: 20
Commission: $4.95/trade

Capital Gains = (Qty * (Sell Price - Purchase Price)) - (2 * Commission)
Capital Gains = (20 * ($10.91 - $9.90)) - (2 * $4.95)
Capital Gains = $10.30 (5.2% profit)

I'm pretty happy with a 5.2% profit for just sitting and waiting a couple of weeks.  Of course, had I traded a larger volume my profit would have been much higher; with such a low volume a large chunk was taken out by commission.  I knew this was going to be the case when I started but like I said in a previous post this is an experiment to make sure I fully understand how things work before I get larger amounts of money involved.

Now I have about $225 available and I need to find somewhere to invest it.  Maybe I should buy a bunch more of SPP.VN since it has actually gone down slightly as well?

Learning through mistakes

So a lot has changed since I made my last post a few days ago.  I am learning a lot very quickly about the way things work.  For example, my ETF orders were rejected because apparently you can't put them in pre-emptively, one has to file them while the market is open.  Who knew?

So after doing a lot of rejiggering (that is a word isn't it?) and researching here is what I have come up with for my current portfolio:

So why did I decide on these in the end?

HBM.TO is a company that most of the various articles I've read on up and coming mineral companies always seems to mention.  A read through the investor relations section of their website seems to indicate that they are in a position for rapid growth in the coming year.

SPP.VN is an up and coming coffee house business.  A fair amount of their company is owned by the people running it so they have strong incentive to do well.  Additionally, reading over their details they have been showing great profits and have an aggressive plan for growing their business by adding locations.  I don't expect to be doing the equivalent of buying shares in Starbucks when they were just starting out, but this seems like a company that will really grow
